In this class, young artists will have fun exploring different ways to create art. This class is essential for any young artist who is going through the process of applying to art schools or just wants to acquire essential drawing skills. Various artistic mediums and techniques will be explored. This class is independently based so that every young artist in the class can create a portfolio that fits the requirements for his or her future school.

In this class, children will have the freedom to explore and create using a number of different tactile mediums and materials. The hands-on projects will be child centered and the process of learning and ‘playing’ will be focused on more than the finished product itself.


Running with Scissors: Textile Workshop

In this class, young artist designers will be using fabrics in many different forms. They will learn techniques for printing and painting on fabrics and will then use it to create their unique pieces. Young designers will be introduced to hand stitch, tie dying, and up-cycling clothing. Using old garments and fabrics they will learn how to make new wearables and accessories.

Learn how to create a your own animated movie one picture at a time! This introduction class will enable students to create multimedia stories and help them develop their ideas in where “if it can happen on paper it will happen on screen”. By taking one picture at a time and building upon those pictures, student’s imaginations become reality. Many types of stop-motion animation from “paper-mation” to “people-mation” will be explored in this class. Every week, teacher Alex Long will assist, teach and encourage the students to create backgrounds, story lines, characters and skills to animate their ideas.


Movie Stars

Step into the third dimension! This pre-teen group will explore the world beyond the page by looking deep beyond the surface of the flat world through stop-motion animation. The students will learn the skills and importance of depth and distance to enhance their story making. The emphasis of perspective will be applied in many aspects of the student’s animation. From “clay-mation to “lego-mation” student animators will be able to manipulate figures and objects in a 3-D world. Every week, teacher Alex Long will assist, teach and encourage the students to create backgrounds, story lines, characters and ways for the artists’ to communicate and share their ideas in a new way.

While looking at animals and art from various places around the world, young artists will focus on strengthening their drawing skills while exploring paint, collage, printmaking and other various techniques. Starting artists will be introduced to proportions, composition and will gain a better understanding of the use of color. Students’ imagination and art culture will grow as they learn from artists of the past and present.


Young Artist Atelier: Expressive Portrait, Figure, Still Life and Landscape

In this class, students will extend their knowledge of drawing expressive portraits, figures, still Life’s and landscapes. Students will use elements such as perspective, form, and shading, while developing basic anatomy, composition and color skills. They will not only learn about historical masters, but will also learn about artists that used these techniques to create work that were ‘new’ and ‘exciting’. Students will develop their skills of working with pencil, ink, pastel, charcoal and paint. They will be encouraged to create works that use traditional techniques while emphasizing the importance of imagination. Students should have a small sized sketchbook that they carry with them where they can attach notes, sketch and write down ideas.
